Just because I love the faded, time-worn look, doesn't mean that's the only direction to go in when making your own wallpaper.
Here's how it looked before I whitewashed it. Had I not been planning to do that, I'd have been more careful with the composition of course, but...

I love this. I did somethig similiar in my daughters room with just old patterns and tissue paper.
